The Bylaws are a legal legal document that dictates how the organization must be governed and outline the organizational purpose, board structure, officer position descriptions and responsibilities, terms of board service, officer/board member succession and removal, official meeting requirements, membership provisions, voting rights, conflict-of-interest policy and grievance mechanisms. Bylaws, except those dealing with the rights of the membership, may be amended by the Board of Directors with ratification by the membership at the next Annual General Meeting. Bylaw amendments affecting the rights of the membership must be approved by the membership at a General Meeting.
UTSU Policy Manual
There are two types of policies: Procedural Policy that outline the procedural framework of the UTSU, such as meeting protocol, and Operational Policy that outlines the framework of managing the operations of the UTSU, such as the budget approval framework. A two-thirds (2/3) majority of the Board may vote to adopt, amend, or rescind Procedural Policy and a simple majority of the Board may vote to adopt, amend, or rescind Operational Policy.
Elections Procedures Code
The Election Procedure Code is intended to provide direction for the Elections and Referenda Committee, Returning Officers and supporting staff to administer, implement and adjudicate the elections in a non-partisan manner for the benefit of the Members of the Union, so that each and every Member of the UTSU has the ability to exercise their democratic right to vote in a transparent and fair election.
UTSU Charter for Referenda
In addition to Annual and General Meetings, the Members of the UTSU may vote on resolutions concerning the business of the Union by means of a referendum. The Charter outlines how referenda should be conducted with the intention to improve the distribution of services by the UTSU, Recognized Campus Groups and/or external organizations.
