Climate Chaos: What is our government doing?
In December 1997, Canada helped to negotiate an agreement in Kyoto, Japan committing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 6% from 1990 levels. Since then, our emissions have increased by 30%. The current federal Conservative government will not sign onto any new targets unless other major pollution emitting countries sign as well. It is still possible to reach the original targets and students are calling on Canada to lead by example. Sign the Youth Declaration on the Climate petition by clicking the link below - tell the Canadian government to act now!
Students for Sustainability: How You Can Go Green
Campuses can produce as much waste and use as many resources as a small city, but there is little environmental regulation for universities and colleges. You can reduce your own ecological footprint by making a few small changes:
1. Use a reusable mug for coffee, tea and water
2. Bring your own bags when shopping
3. Donate things—don't throw them away!
4. Turn off the lights
5. Buy locally and buy vintage
6. Walk, bike or use the public transit
7. Recycle paper and try to decrease the amount you use
Those are only a few suggestions. Check the Canadian Federation of Students/Sierra Youth Coalition website by clicking the link below for more tips and facts about the impact of post-secondary institutions and the role students play in promotion environmental sustainability.
