    1) DROP FEES!

    a) Day of Action - ALL OUT FEB 1st!

On February 1st, UofT students will join over 600,000 members of the Canadian Federation of Students across the country in a National Day of Action. We will take to the streets to defend affordable public education in Canada, calling on the government for more funding for our colleges and universities, and for a tuition fee reduction.

In October, students won the introduction of a new tuition fee reduction grant from the provincial government. The government recently announced that eligible university students will receive $1600 a year, beginning with $800 this semester. However, only one-third of students in Ontario are eligible for the grant. On Feb 1st, we're asking the government to take the $423 million set aside for this grant program to be used to support all students with a tuition fee reduction of 13%.

Join us on Feb 1st, as thousands of students rally to Queen’s Park!

    DAY OF ACTION EVENTS:
11:00am: RALLY at Sid Smith, then march to Convocation Hall
1:00 pm: RALLY at Convocation Hall, then march to Queen's Park
3:00 pm: RALLY at Queen's Park

    b) Academic Accommodation for Feb 1st

The University Administration has asked that students be excused from academic work in order to participate in the Feb 1st Day Of Action! See the full memo from the Provost at: http://www.provost.utoronto.ca/public/pdadc/2011_to_2012/Student_Accommodations_for_National_Day_of_Action___February_1__2012.htm

The University of Toronto Faculty Association has also endorsed the Day of Action and the provision of academic accommodation.

    c) Eligibility for new government grant

The Ontario government has announced more details about the tuition fee reduction grant promised to students in the last provincial election. Eligible university students will receive $1600 a year, beginning with $800 this semester. However, recently the government also confirmed that many students in Ontario are not eligible for this grant.

To find out whether or not you are eligible, visit:
    http://cfsontario.ca/downloads/CFS-Tuition%20Grant%20Briefing%20Note.pdf

If you are eligible, here are the steps you can take to access the grant:
    https://osap.gov.on.ca/OSAPPortal/en/PostsecondaryEducation/Tuition/index.htm

As students, we need to do more to ensure that all of us have access to this $1600 grant. We also need to continue to call on the government to increase funding for colleges and universities. When students take to the streets, we show the government that we want change. Let’s continue our fight to make education accessible to all students.

    d) Campus Club Contest - win $250 at the Day of Action!

Your Club can help us build the largest student Drop Fees Day of Action in history! We welcome each club to have its own contingent at the rally -- and the club with the largest presence will receive up to $250 from U.T.S.U. to be used for prizes or food at your next major event this term! For more information, please email Shaun Shepherd at vpexternal@utsu.ca.

Campaigns: A tuition fee reduction for ALL students!

In the last provincial election, our government was elected on a promise to reduce tuition fees for all students in the form of an up-front grant. For eligible students in university, this grant amounts to $1600. This is an incredible victory for students who have been calling on the government to lower tuition fees.

However, many of our students are being excluded from receiving this grant. Students who are part-time, international, whose family income is over $160,000 annually, who are considered independent of their parents, as well as students in second-entry professional programs and graduate studies will not receive this grant.

Students have been working hard to lobby our government and collect thousands of petition signatures to make sure that all students have access to this grant. As a result, the government has recently announced that students in first-entry professional programs (such as engineering, physical health and education, and music) will have access to this grant!

Still, we need to do more to ensure that every student has access to this $1600 grant. We also need to continue to call on the government to increase funding for colleges and universities. When students sign petitions and take to the streets, we show the government that we want change. By working together, we can win!

Join the campaign to Drop Fees and help organize for the February 1st National Day of Action!

    iii) disOrientation: September 17-21, 2011
Ten years ago, two planes crashed into the World Trade Centre buildings in New York City, inspiring the US-led “War on Terror.” Within months the US invaded Afghanistan with Canadian military support. Two years later the US invaded Iraq under the pretext of eliminating “weapons of mass destruction” that were never found. These military ventures, like so many others, affirmed the simple truth about terrorism: states do it with far greater quantifiable devastation, and always well-disguised as a force of good.

To counter this violence and manipulation, activists around the world persistently research, educate and organize to dig deeper than media sound bytes and to fight those who distort the truth for personal gain. The tenth anniversary of September 11, 2001 reminds us that our conception of the past determines how we operate in the present. Join the Ontario Public Interest Research Group and the University of Toronto Students’ Union for a week of events that will help reveal the most accurate version of history.

Events include social-justice workshops, seminars, and an indepdendent media fair! For a full listing of the week-long series of events, visit http://disorientation2011.org/.

    6)  U.T.S.U. Campaigns

    i) Education Is A Right
This year, students have a real opportunity to push for changes to our education system. From taking over the provincial election on October 6, to taking to the streets in a National Day of Action with students across the country on February 1, we're defending our right to a post-secondary education system that is of high quality, affordable and accessible to all.

    CONTACT: vpexternal@utsu.ca

    ii) Academic and Student Rights
As students, we have the right to a safe, fun and engaging classroom. We have the right to raise critical questions, do research and have our academic freedom respected. Sometimes our rights as students can be violated by unfair academic policies. Through our advocacy, the U.T.S.U. ensures that the academic and individual rights of our members are protected.

    CONTACT: vpua@utsu.ca

    iii) United for Equity
Challenging all forms of discrimination and oppression is an important part of the work of the students’ union. Racism, sexism, ableism, ageism, queerphobia, transphobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, xenophobia and all forms of oppression can affect how students access post-secondary education. Our members have a right to be safe from discrimination inside and outside of the classroom. We work with equity-seeking groups on campus to promote equity and challenge all forms of discrimination.

    CONTACT: vpequity@utsu.ca

    iv) Bottle Water-Free Campus
Access to water is a universal human right. This year UofT is going bottled-water free, because we know that bottled water has a severe impact on the environment and on people’s lives. Producing plastic bottles of water takes up a lot of energy, creates pollution, and the plastic used can also be detrimental to our health. Private, for-profit companies should not be able to decide who has access to water by setting its price. All of us should have access to safe, public drinking water – for free.

STOP FLAT FEES: SAVE ARTS & SCIENCE
In May of 2010, the Governing Council at UofT replaced the per-course tuition model with a flat fee for full-time Arts and Science students at the St. George campus. Next April they will vote on whether or not to continue charging flat fees. Under the flat fee model, students pay a flat tuition fee if they are taking between 3.0 and 6.0 courses. Students with families, jobs and extracurricular commitments often take a reduced course load and should not be penalized. We need to call for more government funding and STOP the implementation of flat fees in Arts and Science!
    CONTACT: vpua@utsu.ca or www.stopflatfees.ca

SAVE THE HUMANITIES: SAVE ARTS & SCIENCE
The dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science has released a new academic plan for our largest faculty. This plan will see departments being shut down or downsized, dramatically affecting the quality of the humanities at UofT. Among the changes is the creation of the School of Languages and Literatures, eliminating the departments of East Asian Studies, Germanic Languages and Literatures, Italian Studies, Slavic Languages and Literatures, Spanish and Portuguese, and the Centre for Comparative Literature (but neither French nor English). Faculty, staff and students are outraged at the changes being implemented without our consultation. Be a part of the campaign to save our humanities!

    BOTTLED WATER-FREE CAMPUS
Access to water is a universal human right. The sale of bottled water represents consumer manipulation, environmental damage and privatisation of a necessity of life. This year we are working to make UofT go bottled-water free because all of us should have access to safe drinking water.
    CONTACT: sustainability@utsu.ca

    KEEP EDUCATION PUBLIC
Students in Ontario pay the highest tuition fees in the country. For students, decreases in funding have led to a decreasing quality of our education. We now have some of the largest classes on the Continent as well as one of the highest student-faculty ratios. More professors are contract staff with no job security. We have fewer TA’s and use i-clickers to compensate. We use turnitin.com because there are no staff to check for plagiarism. Many faculties have been forced to make drastic cuts, and the University administration is proposing more. Are we really getting a quality education? In 2003, students successfully won a tuition fee freeze in Ontario. Together we can work to keep education public.

    MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
2010 is a municipal election year, which is when we elect our City Council. All residents of Toronto who are Canadian citizens - even temporary residents -  have the right to vote in the Toronto municipal election. We want to make sure that as many students as possible are engaged in municipal elections!

    5) Campaigns
U.T.S.U. campaigns are shaped by you, the students. Here are some of our top campaigns for 2010-2011 but there are many more things we will be working on. Check out "Get Involved" below to help shape the priorities of your Students' Union!

    i) STOP FLAT FEES: SAVE ARTS & SCIENCE
In May of 2010, the Governing Council at UofT replaced the per-course tuition model with a flat fee for full-time Arts and Science students at the St. George campus. Next April they will vote on whether or not to continue charging flat fees. Under the flat fee model, students pay a flat tuition fee if they are taking between 3.0 and 6.0 courses. Students with families, jobs and extracurricular commitments often take a reduced course load and should not be penalized. We need to call for more government funding and STOP the implementation of flat fees in Arts and Science!

    CONTACT: vpua@utsu.ca or www.stopflatfees.ca

ii) SAVE THE HUMANITIES: SAVE ARTS & SCIENCE

    CONTACT: vpua@utsu.ca or www.saveartsci.ca

    iii) BOTTLED WATER-FREE CAMPUS
Access to water is a universal human right. The sale of bottled water represents consumer manipulation, environmental damage and privatisation of a necessity of life. This year we are working to make UofT go bottled-water free because all of us should have access to safe drinking water.

    CONTACT: sustainability@utsu.ca

    iv) KEEP EDUCATION PUBLIC

    CONTACT: vpexternal@utsu.ca or www.dropfees.ca

    v) MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
2010 is a municipal election year, which is when we elect our City Council. All residents of Toronto who are Canadian citizens - even temporary residents -  have the right to vote in the Toronto municipal election. We want to make sure that as many students as possible are engaged in municipal elections!
