UTSU International Students Commission

INCOME TAX CLINICS (DROP IN) The UTSU is pleased to offer our tax clinic service once again this year, free to students. Volunteers will assist students with filing back taxes for the years 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. DROP-IN DATES AND TIMES: • Thursday March 9th – 2:00-4:30 pm • Friday March 10th – 10:00- 2:30 pm • Monday March 13th 2:00-4:30 pm • Thursday March 16th 4:00-6:00 pm • Tuesday March 21st 3:00-5:30 pm • Thursday March 23rd 4:00-6:00 pm **all appointments are held at the UTSU office, 12 Hart House Circle. Drop-in first come, first serve within the specified time frame. Check in at the front desk before heading to the basement where tax appointments are held. Please be advised this service assists students who are earning less than $40,000 a year. SOME OF THE DOCUMENTS TO COLLECT ARE THE FOLLOWING: We can only file your taxes properly if you bring all the necessary documentation with you to our Clinic. The following list will help you prepare for having your return completed. General: • Your most recent Notice of Assessment • Your Social Insurance Number (SIN) and, if applicable, your spouse’s SIN • A list of your dependents and their exact dates of birth, and their SINs, if they have one • Information Slips • Many of these slips are available through the Canada Revenue Agency online services. Not every slip applies to each person. • T4 – Salary and wages • T4A – Scholarships, bursaries • T4RSP – Registered retirement savings plan • RC62 – Universal Child Care Benefit • If you have made income for work in a lump sum this year, bring the breakdown statement from the payor • Receipts for expenses and credits: • T778 – Child care expenses and a completed T778 • Union dues • T2202A – Tuition fees and education amount (you can print this from ROSI) • Medical expenses (For prescriptions, a printout can be obtained from your pharmacy) • Charitable or political donations • All property taxes or rent paid, a lease is not considered a receipt • Monthly or yearly public transit passes and the receipt of payment Other: • Details of spouse and dependent income • Date of arrival to Canada and immigration status (if a new immigrant) • Any other documentation that may pertain to your income taxes • This is not an inclusive list but gives an idea of the kinds of documents that you should be gathering and have in your possession before you schedule an appointment. We can not help you if: • You have foreign income over $1000 • You make more than $40,000 annually • More than $1000.00 appears in box 48 of the T4 form (please check before making your appointment) • Bankrupt individuals • You do not show up for your appointment or you do not bring all the relevant paper work • People looking to file for family members must have their family members present at the appointment. • If you use the online system and cannot find a date that works for you, please email services@utsu.ca directly as there is an opportunity to be fit in between appointment times.

There will be a Mental Health Fair on November 17th that is being hosted by the UTSU's Mental Wellness Commission, Health & Wellness, Grad Minds, Peer2Peer, TCMHI, and more! There will be free smoothies, cupcakes, cookies, muffins, donuts, and mental health information disseminated to students to provide a study break. You may find all of these free goodies in the lobby of Sidney Smith. We hope to see you all taking a study break and eating a cupcake with us!

UNITY BALL 2017 Our annual Unity Ball Semi-Formal is a celebration of a year of student engagement and community-building at UofT. The Unity Ball showcases some of our most talented clubs, with dances and performances. We also have a (halal, kosher, vegetarian, vegan options) three course buffet meal and a dance floor so you can have fun! This will be a sit-down dinner and tickets will cost $20.00 each and $140.00 for a table of 8 savings of one ticket. Cash bar and a free candy bar. Excellence in Undergraduate Research Award: This award recognizes strides in research made by undergraduate students Residence Assistant Excellence Award: This award aims to recognize the efforts of exemplary undergraduate dons. Mentorship Excellence Award: This award recognizes the efforts of exemplary undergraduate students who have acted as mentors to other students. Teachers Assistant Excellence Award: This award recognizes undergraduate Teachers Assistants who have gone above and beyond their roles to teach other students. Orientation Leader Award: For those leaders in College, Program or University Orientations who have gone above and beyond their roles in the time of Orientation and beyond. Individual Leadership Award: For students who have shown exemplary bravery, leadership, and resolve in the face of adversity.
