We are very happy to invite all of the Sociology students to our Winter Career seminar!
This is a wonderful opportunity for you to speak with professionals whose academic background includes sociology. Professional paths and personal experiences in social work and academia will be discussed by our panel through a Q&A format. There will also be time for you to network with our speakers in the last half-hour.
Our speakers include:
Julie Jo (HBA, MPP), Policy Advisor, Ontario Treasury Board Secretariat.
Julie Jo is a proud U of T graduate of Specialist in Sociology program. After a number of research experiences, meaningful friendships, and lifechanging mentors in Sociology department, she developed strong skill-sets and competencies necessary for her dream to pursue graduate studies at U of T's Master of Public Policy (MPP) program, marrying her interests in social issues and policy development and decision making to address those issues, namely inside the government. Shortly after graduating from MPP, with a great interest in immigration policy and public administration, she has been working in the Ontario Public Service, first at the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration, and currently at the Treasury Board Secretariat. She hopes to instill hope, curiosity and pride in future sociologists and have the audience an open-mind about another way to use sociology knowledge beyond (not too far) academia or classroom.
Josh Rosenblum (HBA, MA), Senior Research Director, Synqrinus Inc. Josh Rosenblum is the senior research director for Synqrinus Inc, which he joined three years ago after long stints with Kantar at TNS and Millward Brown. As a research professional with a decade of agency experience, Josh’s insights have been used in award winning industry submissions to the Cassies (in 2009) and MRIA (in 2013). As a younger man, his passion for sociology led Josh to graduate on the Dean’s List at U of T (B.A. 2006), and then get his Master of Arts from McGill (2007). Outside work, Josh is: an avid traveler, dedicated volunteer, and proud fan of ‘80s music.
Liana Baciu (HBA), Scrum Master, Investors Group.
After spending 6 years on her PSY specialist and SOC major at U of T, Liana did not to find full time employment for 2 years. During this period she switched careers twice, faced her mental health challenges and got a full time job in a field in which she had absolutely no interest - IT. Today Liana is a scrum master at an HR software start-up. The skills and knowledge developed during her degree, including curiosity and perseverance, have allowed her to find her way to a niche that is not only fulfilling but also lucrative.
Light refreshment will be provided.
We look forward to seeing you there!
