Fees & Opt-Out Forms
The University of Toronto Students’ Union fee is used to offer programs and services to its student members, who benefit from some of the lowest fees among major university student unions in Canada. Each semester, these fees are collected via ACORN as a component of tuition. Explore the fee information provided that explains the categories of fees collected by UTSU.
Students can choose to opt-out of certain refundable fees during a one-month period that aligns with the Health & Dental fee opt-out timeframe. To opt out, please complete and submit the relevant form.
On the Acorn invoice, only fees with “UTSU” listed next to them are charged by the UTSU. Questions concerning any fee charged by another student society should be directed to the student society. Questions concerning University fees should be directed to the registrar’s office.
Please note that in order to opt-out of the UTSU Health & Dental Plan, you will need proof of alternate extended health and dental insurance.
UTSU Membership Fee
The UTSU Membership Fee covers essential programs, services, and advocacy, dedicated to ensuring accessibility, equity and inclusion of all students in student life. The amount is adjusted each year for inflation.
Student Aid
The Student Aid Fee is the UTSU’s most direct strategy for responding to the financial challenges faced by its members, providing students with small emergency grants.
Student Refugee Program
The Student Refugee Program (SRP) provides life-changing opportunities to students new to Canada. SRP students continue their education in a safe and supportive environment at U of T and build a better future for themselves. The SRP assists with tuition, and offers day-to-day social and academic support.
Student Commons Capital Levy
The Student Commons Capital Levy covers essential renovations at the Student Commons as well as paying the Annual License Fee collected for 25 years after building opening. The Student Commons was built following a 2007 referendum established the Student Commons project to build a student-designed and run student centre, its objectives, and the levy to finance it.
Student Commons Operating Levy
The Student Commons Operating levy is used to finance building operating costs such as utilities, building maintenance, custodial services and insurance.
Wheelchair Accessibility Fund
The Wheelchair Accessibility Fund empowers UTSU to foster barrier-free environments by providing essential capital funding and resources. This fund ensures that students with disabilities and those requiring accessibility accommodations can fully engage in student wellness programming and campus life. This dedicated Fund allows for accessibility improvements across campus to address immediate challenges and increase access for all students.
Accessibility Resources Fund
The Accessibility Resources Fund covers assistive technologies, grants, and services to ensure a welcoming and inclusive campus. It provides accessibility resources for students with learning disabilities, those who are deaf or hard of hearing, those who are blind or have low vision, and students with mobility limitations, ADHD, or other psychiatric or medical conditions.
Canadian Federation of Students
Formed in 1981, CFS provides students with a united voice, provincially and nationally, and creates space and opportunity for students to join together in creating change to support students on and off-campus.
Community Housing and Employment Support Services
The CHESS Fund is an initiative designed to provide valuable resources and legal support to students facing challenges related to tenancy and employment.
The Health & Dental Plan administered by UTSU provides full or partial coverage for many services not covered by provincial health care, or in the case of International students, the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP).
The Plan includes such things as medical and paramedical care; prescription drugs; preventative and emergency dental care; vision care; and travel insurance. With proof of insurance, you can opt-out of the health plan, and the fee will be refunded.
Health & Dental Plan fees are charged on a compulsory basis as part of tuition. A student may opt out if already covered by an equivalent health and dental plan, such as a parent’s or spouse’s employee benefit plan, or a plan provided by NHIB or Health Canada.

The following fees are refundable based on how and when they were created. Opting out of these fees is available between September 8th to October 2nd and January 6th to January 29th for the 2026-2027 academic year.
We ask our members to consider the importance of the services covered by these fees that go directly towards supporting members of our student community.
Orientation
Orientation is an official welcome to campus and helps students connect with campus life, explore clubs, learn about opportunities on campus, and meet new people.
Daycare Subsidy
The Day Care Subsidy helps fund Dollars for Child Care, which offers childcare support and programming for student families, and connects student parents to resources on campus and in Toronto so that they can thrive.
Foster Parents Plan
This Foster Parents Plan Fee was set up by students to support the work of Plan International in their work with children and youth in developing countries that lack access to basic necessities, like health care, nutrition and education. This fund helps provide resources for young people to empower them to raise the standard of living for their families and communities.
Radical Roots
The Radical Roots Fee is dedicated to combating food insecurity at the University of Toronto. This fund provides vital support to the UTSU Food Bank, various food programs, and the exam snack initiative.
Fees are collected by the UTSU on behalf of different levy-collecting groups on campus called Service Groups. These groups provide students with a variety of different services designed to improve your university experience while also benefiting the wider community as a whole.
Service Group fees are refundable, and opt-outs are available between September 8th to October 2nd and January 6th to January 29th for the 2026-2027 academic year.
